There are few canvasses more versatile than the human face, or as fertile in its range of expressions. Asit Ghara has trapped the fleeting gestures in more than 1000 works, a fraction of which was displayed at his recent exhibition at the Birla Academy of Art and Culture. The exhibition spanned three broad themes — Mother and Child, Expressions, and Landscapes.
Technique and Evolution
Ghara imparts a unique technique to his works:
- The Flaky Impression: Dry paint smeared on a paper (not canvas) is swiftly worked with a spatula or oil brush.
- Monoprints: His recent experiment involves painting an inverted picture on a glass surface. While the paint is still dry, he casts the impression on white paper. The process is repeated thrice for the final impression.
In his earlier exhibitions, Ghara had come in for flack due to the predominant sadistic impression on the faces of his women. "In this exhibition, I have toned the violence on the faces. Women face more hurdles than men. The relentless struggle marks their visage. My earlier works on women stressed the streaks of struggle," he explains. "My later paintings focus on the winning instinct."
